Your smile serves many purposes. It helps you communicate with others, chew the food you love, and present yourself to the world around you. This means taking good care of your smile not only protects your oral health, but it keeps you functioning normally.

Caring for your smile means protecting it from harm, and today Dr. Sid Molayem and our orthodontic team are happy to help you avoid those habits which could harm the smile you work so hard to achieve.

Ice: Do you enjoy chewing on ice? If so, you could be damaging your pearly whites. Chewing on these cold temperature items shocks the teeth and the pressure can fracture and break the tooth enamel. When this happens, microscopic fractures are created in the tooth which can later lead to major cracks over time.

Tools: Do you have a habit of using your teeth as tools such as opening packages or things when you can’t find your scissors? The pressure used to bite into things that are non-food items can damage your teeth, unfortunately. The pressure exerted can traumatize the teeth and break them. Please don’t use your teeth to rip tags off of clothing or open packages.

Tooth Grinding: If you clench or grind your teeth due to stress, you might consider wearing a mouth guard or night guard to relieve this habit. You might need to find ways to release stress and avoid caffeinated beverages which can exacerbate stress or anxiety, and implement relaxation techniques.

Sports: If you engage in contact sports, or sports that might expose you to impact or injury, protect your smile by wearing a mouthguard.

We hope these tips can help you better care for your healthy smile.
