Are you new to an orthodontic treatment? Perhaps, you have been wearing your braces for months now? The dentist or orthodontist that provided the appliance may have given you specific instructions to follow and things that should not be done. These are essential to avoid any unnecessary pain, discomfort, and troubles with the treatment. It is also important to secure a successful procedure in making the teeth straighter and healthier. At Beverly Hills Braces, we want our patients to get the most out of any dental treatments we provide. For those who are new or are halfway to the procedure, here is a list of refresher we prepared.

Do not forget to remove the rubber bands when eating

Aside from the rubber bands that keep the archwire in place, other patients should also wear interarch rubber bands. These are in charge of moving the jaws to its proper position. Not removing the band can cause it to break or snap which can be accidentally consumed by the patient when eating.

Chewing on ice or gum

Dentists discourage patients to bite on hard and sticky foods. Not only will hard foods cause the teeth to chip or break, but they also put a risk for the orthodontic appliance to snap. Either way, both can be painful which need the immediate attention of a dental professional. Sticky foods require the patient to apply repeated stress on the wires, brackets, and rubber bands. As a result, they can move out of alignment, break, and even cause pain. It is best if the patient would avoid these foods to have a hassle-free and painless treatment with braces.

Excessive intake of acidic and sugary beverages

Even without braces, patients are not advised to drink too much sweet or acidic liquids since it can wear down the teeth and also cause it to become discolored. With braces, it can affect the adhesive that keeps the brackets in place. Not only does it increases the risk of brackets to pop off, but it can even cause cavities to form.

Receive a hit in the mouth

The incidence is usually because of contact sports or if done intentionally. Whatever the case may be, it should be avoided as much as possible. Aside from having damaged teeth, the patient is more likely to sustain soft tissue injuries due to the metal brackets and wires.

Not reporting any present irregularities

A dislodged bracket, sharp points, shifting archwires, or other sudden irregularities with the orthodontic appliance should be reported to the dentist. Disregarding any problems may cause the condition of the teeth to worsen or even cause unnecessary pain.
